Predicting Your Future

Take a pack of cards, and making yourself which king or queen you please, lay them out on a table, nine in a row; and wherever you find yourself placed, count nine cards every way, making yourself one, and then you will see what card you tell to; and whatever that particular card indicates, you may be sure it will come to pass, if you deal the cards in a proper manner.

If a married woman try the cards, see must make her husband the king of the same suit she is queen of; but if a single woman, she may make her sweetheart king of whichever suit she likes. The knave of the same suit represents the men's thoughts, so that you may know what they are thinking of, by telling nine cards from where they are placed, making them one. To try if you shall have your wish, shuffle the cards well, (as likewise tell your fortune,) wishing all the time for some one thing; you must cut them once, and mind what card you cut; shuffle them again, and then deal them out into three parcels; when you have done this, look over every parcel, and if the card you cut comes next yourself, or next the ace of hearts, you will have your wish: but if the nine of spades be next, you will not, for that is a disappointment.

Ace of clubs foretells that if you use great industry, and be saving, in the early part of your life, you will acquire great wealth, much happiness in life, and great tranquillity of mind.

King of clubs announces a man who is humane, upright, affectionate, and faithful in his engagements; he will be happy himself, and will endeavour to make every one so with whom he has a connexion.

Queen of clubs indicates a female of a mild, confiding disposition, who may be tempted to yield to the wishes of a devoted lover before the matrimonial knot be tied; it also foretells that, should she be so imprudent, she will never be happy, nor be married, however much they may love each other.

Knave of clubs indicates a generous and sincere friend, one who will exert himself warmly for your interest and welfare.

Ten of clubs denotes that you will come into the possession of some riches from an unexpected quarter; but it threatens you that you will, at the same time, lose a dear and valued friend.'

Nine of clubs foretells, that unless you act in obedience to the advice of your elders, you will displease some friends, by a too steady adherence to your own opinions.

Eight of clubs indicates a party very covetous, and exceedingly fond of money; that he will obtain it; but that it will rather prove a torment than a comfort. It also warns you against rash speculations.

Seven of clubs promises a good fortune and happiness: but beware of the opposite sex, for from or through them you may experience great misfortune.

Six of clubs predicts that you will engage in a lucrative trade, and that, if they are well brought up, your children will thrive in the world.

Five of clubs indicates that, by your pursuing a just and prudent line of conduct, you will be married to a son who will raise your circumstances. Four of clubs cautions you against inconstancy, or change of object, for the sake of money; and conveys a warning to you to conquer this failing.

Tray of clubs predicts that you will be married more than once, and forewarns you to be exceedingly careful in your choice.

Deuce of clubs indicates that, unless you manifest great caution, some unforeseen opposition will interfere with or frustrate your favourite inclination.

Ace of diamonds signifies that you will receive a letter; from whom, and about what, must be learned from the cards that are near you.

King of diamonds usually refers to a man of a fiery temper, preserving his anger, seeking for opportunities of revenge, and obstinate in his resolutions.

Queen of diamonds indicates a woman fond of company, and somewhat of a coquette; it also warns her not to give cause for slander.

Knave of diamonds forewarns you of a man who, however nearly related, will look more after his own interest than yours; be fond of his own opinion, and get angry if contradicted; it also warns you never to play for money.

Ten of diamonds promises a country husband, or wife, with wealth and children; the card next to it will tell you the number of children; it also signifies a purse of gold.

Nine of diamonds predicts that the person will be of an industrious, but roving description, never contented with his lot.

Eight of diamonds is indicative of a person averse to marriage till late in life; it also foretells that prosperity in life will be secured by the exercise of industry and prudence.

Seven of diamonds forewarns you to use great discretion, and to look well into the character of your lover, before you enter into the married state, or perhaps you may be tormented with a sot or a spendthrift.

Six of diamonds foretells an early marriage and premature widowhood.

Five of diamonds indicates that you will have several children, who will succeed in their undertakings, and prove a comfort to you: it also predicts that

you will soon hear some unexpected news. Four of diamonds predicts that unfaithfulness will produce great vexation and trouble through life.

Tray of diamonds is a caution, that unless you are careful and prudent in your conduct, you will be engaged in quarrels, law-suits, and domestic disagreements; it also foretells that your partner will be of a vexing temper.

Deuce of diamonds indicates that your heart will be engaged in love at an early period; that your friends will not approve your choice; and if you marry without their consent, it will cause you great trouble and unhappiness.

Ace of hearts: if the ace be attended by spades, it foretells quarrelling; if by hearts, it predicts affection and friendship; if by diamonds, you will hear of money and some absent friend: if by clubs, it denotes merry-making.


King of hearts indicates a man of a good-natured disposition, but rather hasty and passionate, and rash in many of his undertakings.

Queen of hearts denotes a woman of fair complexion, faithful and affectionate to her friends, and just and prudent in her general conduct.

Knave of hearts indicates a person of no particular sex, but, usually, the dearest friend or nearest relation of the consulting party.--You must pay great attention to the cards that stand next to the knave, as from them alone you can judge whether the person it represents will favour your inclinations, be averse to them, or in any thwart your views.

Ten of hearts is prophetic of good-nature and many children; it is also a corrective of the bad tidings of the cards that may stand next to it; and if the neighbouring cards are of good import, it confirms their value.

Nine of hearts promises wealth and high esteem: and even if the cards near it are unfavourable, expect, with care, to improve your circumstances.

Eight of hearts is a sign of drinking or feasting; and it cautions you against associating with a man fond of drinking and gay company.

Seven of hearts indicates a person of a fickle and unfaithful disposition, addicted to vicious practices, and given to the meanness of recrimination, by accusing others, to excuse themselves.

Six of hearts refers to a person of a generous but credulous disposition, one that would be easily imposed upon by flatterers, against whom it cautions you to be on your guard; it is also indicative of a charitable disposition.

Five of hearts foretells that jealousy, without foundation, is likely to produce domestic recrimination, and embitter your married life.

Four of hearts predicts that the person will not be married till late in life, and this will proceed from a proper care and delicacy in making a choice.

Tray of hearts indicates that your own imprudence will greatly contribute to your experiencing the ill-will of others; and cautions you, in all you say or do, to use the utmost circumspection.

Deuce of hearts foretells that extraordinary success and good fortune will attend this person, though, if unfavourable cards attend, this will require great care and attention on the part of the individual in order to secure it.

Ace of spades indicates that good temper, and carefulness in your domestic arrangements, will produce all the happiness that can be expected in this life; whilst an evil disposition and negligence will produce trouble and sorrow.

King of Spades is prophetic of a man ambitious and successful with some great personage, who will have it in his power to advance him; but let him beware that he does not provoke a reverse.

Queen of spades indicates a person that will be greatly tempted to do evil: and it forewarns a female, that attempts will be made on her virtue.

Knave of spades points to a person, who although he has your real interest at heart, will be too indolent to pursue it with zeal, unless you

take frequent opportunities of rousing his attention by your own acts of kindness.

Ten of spades is a card of bad import; and it will, to a certain extent, counteract the good effect of the cards near you.

Nine of spades is the worst card in the whole pack: it foretells that, unless you act with great discreetness, you will suffer from dangerous sickness, loss of fortune, and from calamities and dissensions in your family,

Eight of spades forewarns that if you carry out your plans with too much hastiness of decision, you will offend your friends, and experience strong opposition from them, or those whom you imagine to be such; if this card come close to you, be exceedingly cautious in all your undertakings.

Seven of spades indicates the loss of a valuable friend, and great distresses; out of which you can only escape by your own exertions.

Six of spades denotes that while you are contented, and act discreetly, you will be happy. It also denotes wealth through industry. Five of spades promises you success in the choice of a companion for that you

will meet with one very fond of you; but it likewise shows that your own temper and conduct require managing.

Four of spades predicts that care and attention will be necessary to prevent ill fortune; it also foretells sickness and loss of character.

Tray of spades indicates that you are likely to be unfortunate in marriage, and be made unhappy, unless you be circumspect in your arrangements.

Deuce of spades always signifies a coffin, but whom it is for, must depend entirely on the cards that are near it.
