The setting is the basement of a private home, anywhere, in modern times. A Witch sits inside a magical circle that has been ritually cast with a small knife called an athame and marked with a white cord. She is working a spell to attract the right partner into her life. The spell is cast with knots, a simple but effective form of magic, with a long tradition in folklore. In accordance with the beliefs of her Wiccan path, the Witch is not trying to influence a particular person, for that is considered wrong use of magic. Rather, she is using magic to attract the unknown person who is meant to be with her.
She has composed a spell in the form of a charm, a little rhyming prayer:
The flower of love
Blooms day and night
Everything in life
Goes right.
I have all the love
That I desire
Love lift me up
Higher and higher .
While she recites the charm, she envisions the help of the Goddess in answering her request. She then ties knots in a nine-foot-long pink cord. The pink symbolizes love. The knots, according to magical lore, hold the power of the spell. She ties nine knots, reciting an old folk magic charm:
By the knot of one the spell's begun
By the knot of two the spell is true
By the knot of three so mote it be
By the knot of four the open door
By the knot of five the spell's alive
By the knot of six the spell I fix
By the knot of seven the gates of heaven
By the knot of eight the hand of fate
By the knot of nine the thing is mine.
Over the next nine days, she will untie one knot a week while focusing intense concentration on the spell. Untying the knot releases the energy of the spell. In this way, she will release magical forces that will help bring about her goal: meeting the person who meant to be her partner in life.
